I really thought there would never be another point and shoot to rival my beloved Pentax Optio A30. It had everything I ever needed and it was perfectly pocket-sized, but! BUT.
This Sony Cybershot TX7 is pretty. freakin’. awesome. I LOVE the touch-screen interface, but I don’t think it’s multi-touch (iPad, iPhone, iPod, multi-touch mouse), so it has taken some getting used to. My fingers flow really quickly over the screen of my iPod, but this feels a little clunky, however, that is my only complaint.
It has all the settings I want; the ability to shoot semi-manually or choose a scene for quick shooting - those are the most important characteristics. I need it to be able to function like a point and shoot OR function like an SLR. If I’m setting out to take photos, I wouldn’t take this with.. that’s not the point of it. The point is for it to be able to take print-worthy photographs AND quick snaps of friends.
This camera does it seamlessly by having a fixed lens. All I need do is move the camera closer to a subject to shoot macro. To take pics of friends standing in a group, I back up, it finds everyone’s faces and sets the focal plane in the middle. It’s not perfect, but it’s GOOD. Really good. It takes a LOT to impress me considering I still tote around my twenty pound Canon AE1. Well, okay, it’s not twenty pounds, but it sure as hell is heavy.
This is much lighter - the screen is 3.5in wide, a completely touch interface smoothly integrated into the body of the camera.

I think they’re just about good enough :)
